Binaural Location is an audio unit plugin that offers advanced capabilities beyond traditional pan controls, allowing users to precisely position audio within a virtual space around the listener. By manipulating the locations of virtual speakers represented by the L and R control points on the screen, the app realistically simulates sound originating from specific points in space relative to the listener's ears based on angle and distance.

It should be noted that Binaural Location functions exclusively within host applications like GarageBand and is not a standalone effect.

Is it solely a sophisticated pan control? Not quite. This plugin distinguishes itself by simultaneously modeling three key aspects of audio location:
<ol>
<li>The introduction of delay between the sound source and the listener's left and right ears influenced by distance.</li>
<li>The alteration in high-frequency clarity perceived by the left ear when sound originates from the opposite side, owing to sound waves traversing around the head.</li>
<li>The dynamic adjustment of sound volume based on listener-speaker proximity.</li>
</ol>

Regarding speaker usage, Binaural Location is optimized for headphones to ensure an immersive binaural audio experience. While functional with speakers, users will not fully benefit from the intended spatial effects.

In music production, this plugin serves as a creative tool offering unique possibilities. For instance, enabling orbit mode initiates real-time modulation of the left and right sound sources, causing them to move in an orbital pattern around the listener. This effect introduces subtle pitch variations through the Doppler effect as sounds approach and recede from the ears. Additionally, volume variations synchronized with changes in distance enhance the immersive experience. This effect resembles characteristics of a Leslie speaker or stereo chorus with a focus on modulated filtering over pitch shifting. Combining it with reverb creates a mesmerizing modulated reverb effect.
